Energias de Portugal (EDP) has announced the financing of nine renewable energy projects in Mozambique and four other African countries, totalling €1 million, as part of the sixth round of its 2AE (Access to Energy) Fund.
The 2AE Fund is aimed at “initiatives in areas such as health and education, which will have an impact on the lives of more than 5 million people,” according to a statement from the Portuguese company.
Health units and schools in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria and Rwanda, as well as Mozambique, will benefit, making for a total of more than 150 health units that provide primary care to the population and around 20 schools.
“In all, there will be nine projects that, through the use of renewable energies, will promote social, environmental and economic development in rural communities in these countries,” EDP said. “In total, it is estimated that these new projects will benefit around 300,000 people directly and more than 5.5 million indirectly.”
The nine projects, selected from a total of 195 applications, have in common the use of decentralised solar production technologies, with three of them focused on improving healthcare, four on educational institutions, one on community development and one on water supply.
“With the support of the A2E Fund, they will be able to provide these services using renewable, safe and affordable energy,” said the company.
Since it was launched in 2018, the A2E Fund has financed a total of 38 projects in Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania, with support totalling €3.5 million, helping improve the lives of more than 230,000 people directly, and around 2.5 million indirectly, the statement adds.
“With this initiative, EDP is reinforcing its strategy of social impact and fair energy transition worldwide, especially in developing economies,” it concludes.
