The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, yesterday (16-01) met representatives of the governments of Portugal, Congo Brazzaville and Algeria in Maputo, as part of the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and historical relations.
Portugal was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Paulo Rangel.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Minister Rangel explained that the meeting served, among other objectives, to deliver a letter from the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, publicly recognising Daniel Chapo’s election.
Rangel also expressed the Portuguese government’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with Mozambique.
“We wish you all the best for this mandate that is now beginning and for the strengthening of relations between Portugal and Mozambique,” the Portuguese diplomat said.
He dubbed Mozambique and Portugal two sister countries with a shared history, who valued each other.
The two discussed the reforms that the Mozambican president announced yesterday (15-01) at his inauguration. They also discussed bilateral cooperation and the role of Portuguese companies, which have supported Mozambican workers in difficult times.
The special envoy of Algeria, that country’s Minister for Veterans, Rebiga Laid, took the opportunity to convey a message of congratulations from the President of Alegria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune to the Mozambican head of state.
The meeting also served to cement historical relations, taking into account Algeria’s support in Mozambique’s liberation struggle. “The meeting served to exchange opinions on strengthening our bilateral relations, the commitment between the two leaders in this cooperation,” said Laid.
In turn, the Minister of Public Service and Security of the Republic of Congo (congo Brazzaville), Fitmin Ayessa, reported that the Congolese president Denis Sassou Nguesso congratulated President Chapo on his inauguration and reiterated the ties of cooperation with his country.
“The President of the Republic of Congo Brazzaville asked me to reiterate to President Daniel Chapo that Congo and Mozambique have had good relations since before Mozambique’s independence,” said Ayessa.
The Republic of Congo Brazzaville intends to consolidate relations with Mozambique in the economic and other areas. Congo was also one of the countries that supported Mozambique during its national liberation struggle.
