Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Thursday is to travel to China for a six-day visit which symbolically begins at the Great Wall and ends in Macau, during which he is to be welcomed by China’s president, Xi Jinping.
According to a note published on Monday by the presidency, De Sousa is to be in China between Friday, 26 April and 1 May, to participate in the second “Belt and Road” forum, a Chinese initiative on infrastructure investment, and then in a state visit, invited by his counterpart.
In Beijing, he is to be welcomed by the Chinese prime minister, Li Keqiang, and the president, Xi Jinping, who was in Portugal at the beginning of December. De Sousa will then go to Shanghai and to Macau, where he will meet with local authorities.
He “will have the opportunity to contact those responsible for the current dynamism of the bilateral relationship, namely cultural agents, sportspeople, entrepreneurs and investors, as well as visit several of the sites illustrating the richness of the Chinese culture and the long relationship with Portugal,” according to the note.
