Portugal’s Judicial Police (PJ) have detained a 57-year-old foreign national in the Aveiro area who was wanted by the authorities in China on suspicion of bribery in sport, the force said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the PJ said that on Tuesday it carried out a series of actions that led to the location and arrest of the suspect in fulfilment of an international arrest warrant issued by the Chinese judicial authorities.
“The events took place in July 2017, when the suspect, with the aim of reaching the Chinese Super League, arranged the result of a football match, paying the sum of five million yuan (around 630,000 euros), so that the other team would lose,” the statement adds.
According to the PJ, the suspect – who could face a sentence of 10 years in prison – was brought before the Porto Court of Appeal, where he was ordered to report twice a week to the authorities, as well as having to hand over his passport.
