The 40th Contemporary Art Fair ARCOmadrid, in Spain, which starts on Wednesday and runs until 11 July, this year includes the participation of nine Portuguese galleries, three Brazilian galleries and two Angolan galleries, the organisation said.
In its 40th year of existence, the biggest Spanish art fair is being held with the challenge of reactivating the market, with the presence of 130 galleries from 26 countries, including nine Portuguese galleries, four less than last year.
The general programme includes six Portuguese galleries – 3+1 Arte Contemporânea, Bruno Múrias, Filomena Soares, Miguel Nabinho, Pedro Cera and Vera Cortês, all from Lisbon – a Brazilian, Baró (São Paulo) and an Angolan, Movart (Luanda).
In the ‘Opening’ section (curated programmes) the Portuguese galleries Duarte Sequeira (Braga), Balcony and Uma Lulik (both Lisbon), and the Angolan Jahmek (Luanda) are participating.
This year gives a different emphasis to the Latin American presence, with the Remitente section, which incorporates two Brazilian galleries: Casa Triângulo and Luciana Brito Galeria, both from São Paulo.
One of the novelties of this year’s ARCOmadrid is the 25 artistic projects, all by women, to help increase the visibility and protagonism of female creators, which includes the Angolan gallery Jahmek, with a project by Helena Uambembe.
This year’s ARCOmadrid will be held, as usual, at IFEMA (the Madrid trade fair), after having been postponed from February – the initial planned date – to July, to offer guarantees of commercial success, according to the organisers.
The organisation sought a date that could provide a better environment to allow international mobility, in a more stable economic context.
