Altice, the French-owned company that is Portugal’s largest telecommunications operator, is to close the international portals of its unit Sapo, namely in Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde and East Timor, by the end of September, operating in future only out of Portugal, a company official told Lusa.
“After much thought, it was decided centrally that the Sapo project will operate only from Portugal, closing local operations,” the official said. “This means that, as of 30 September, Sapo will continue to serve Portuguese-speaking content globally from Portugal, but will no longer have operations in other geographies.”
According to Altice, “in the labour field the whole process was friendly, through a termination by mutual agreement with the employees”, whose number was not revealed.
Sapo’s internationalisation process started in 2008 with the Sapo Angola and Cabo Verde portals, followed by Mozambique the following year and Sapo East Timor in September 2010.
These international portals worked as content aggregators, through local partnerships with several media; besides news, they featured themed areas dedicated to employment, economy, culture, sports, blogs and lifestyle.
