Portugal is the seventh most peaceful country in the world, according to the 2024 Global Peace Index, that is, ranked one place below were it was the previous year, but maintaining its fifth position among European countries.
According to the ranking published on Tuesday by the international think tank the Institute for Economics and Peace, Portugal is the seventh most peaceful country in the world, with 1,372 points in a ranking in which the lowest score, that is, the best, is that of Iceland with 1,112.
In the index drawn up annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace in collaboration with the United Nations, Portugal ranks 14th in terms of the economic impact of violence, with the costs of it representing around 3% of Portugal’s gross domestic product.
In this, the 18th Global Peace Index, the podium of the list of most peaceful countries is occupied by Iceland, Ireland and Austria, while at the bottom of the table are Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace represents the most comprehensive analysis of peace, economic value, trends and how to develop peaceful societies, covering 99.7% of the world’s population by analysing 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators. These indicators are grouped into three key domains: Ongoing Conflicts, Safety and Security and Militarisation.
According to the 2024 Global Peace Index, there are now 56 conflicts at a global level, the highest number since World War II. The report warns that the world is at a crossroads and that without concerted efforts, there is a risk of a resurgence of major conflicts.
