The conflict between the Royal Plastics and ETG Export Marketing commercial groups in Nampula province is negatively affecting the handling of imports through the Port of Nacala, port director Naimo Induma told the secretary of state for Nampula province at a meeting in the city of Nacala this Thursday.
Nampula Secretary of State Mety Gondola made it known that the case was now progressing through the court and it was hoped that it would be speedily resolved, as the situation was leaving more than 1,300 permanent and seasonal workers at ETG in the doldrums.
Secretary of State Gondola also observed that ships not docking or unloading food products for the ETG group due to lack of payment could lead to shortages in the market.
The conflict involves Royal Plastics alleging the sabotage by ETG Exporting Marketing of the export of around 30,000 tonnes of bulk pigeon-pea and soy to India, and demanding compensation of around US$60 million.
While the problem remains unresolved, ETG group facilities in the port are closed under court order.
