The company Silos e Terminal Graneleiro da Matola (STEMA) in 2022 saw an increase in the amount of grain handled by just over 90,000 tons, despite the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has been constraining access to the main producers of cereals, mainly wheat, consumed in Mozambique.
STEMA was created in 1996, initially in response to the cereal crisis caused by natural disasters in 1991. The Mozambican government then decided to transform the project into a company, initially with a 95% state holding. Since 2015, IGEPE has held 56% and the Mozambican state, through the National Directorate of the Treasury of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, directly holds 44%.
In the first 11 months of 2022, the grain terminal received 225,583 tons of various cereals, against 132,201 handled last year.
STEMA chairman Arlindo Chilundo told Domingo in an interview that 2022 also saw a greater diversification in the goods handled.
For the first time, 58,261 tons of South African-produced soybeans were exported to Malaysia, the Philippines and Bangladesh, representing around 26% of the total cargo handled in 2022. The year also saw the arrival of 147,810 tons of wheat, 65% of which for domestic consumption.
