The Port of Maputo will increase its annual cargo handling capacity by 1.5 million tonnes to 26.5 million tonnes this year, the Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Communications has said.
The increase in port capacity will result from a US$64 (EUR 56.1 million) investment in the rehabilitation and modernisation of quays VI, VIII and IX, a source from the ministry revealed.
The work is being undertaken by the Portuguese construction company Mota-Engil and includes dredging, reinforcement of support stakes and the demolition of warehousing on the quays in order to access more space.
In 2017, the Port of Maputo finished dredging the access channel from a depth of 11 to 14 metres, permitting access for ships up to 120,000 tons.
