The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) announced the entry into operation, on Monday (May 1), of a new temporary holding area for trucks accessing the port area, within the framework of measures aimed at facilitating access to the site and relieving pressure on National Road Number Four (N4).
The new gate 1, located in the Luís Cabral neighbourhood, can accommodate 50 trucks. The 1.25-hectare enclosure has a service network and a lighting system, the culmination of work lasting a year, according to a statement from the Port of Maputo.
A second phase of the project, concerning support services, is still underway and scheduled for completion within 76 days.
Simultaneously, interventions have taken place on the access road to the port, with a second phase including widening to three exit and four entrance lanes already begun.
The new infrastructure also has a truck inspection point at the entrance to the port and dedicated accesses for abnormal loads, with the completion of the project scheduled for August of this year.
This project emerged within the scope of the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the MPDC and Maputo Municipal Council in August, 2020, aimed at organising and requalifying the port area.
The requalification will allow for a greater and more orderly flow of traffic, as well as improving working conditions for truck drivers.
