Safety has been enhanced in Beira’s railway and port areas with the opening of a police post for Traffic and Protection Police, Noticias reports today.
According to PRM spokesman Daniel, the measure comes in the wake of frequent complaints of theft submitted to the 4th Police Station of Munhava by cargo operators working with clients from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and the DRC.
Speaking to Notícias in Beira, Macuácua explained that in order to achieve better flow by a daily average of 600 trucks entering and leaving the port of Beira, traffic police officers were deployed and traffic lights placed in Munhava, where trucks enter the port.
“The operation is already showing positive effects, with the arrest of individuals climbing trucks in motion to steal fuel and goods exported and imported by countries of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) who use Beira port,” Macuácua said.
Some truckers praised the police presence between the Port and the lights at Munhava because they ran the risk of damaged linings from the theft of goods, even being forced to bear forwarding agents’ losses.
Executive director of Ports and Railways for Central Mozambique, Cândido Jone, considered it premature to make any assessment of the impact of the new measure, implemented by Minister of the Interior, Basilio Monteiro, and of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, on their last visit to Beira.
The problems facing managers and operators were debated in the first half of this January during a regular meeting of the Port of Beira Security Committee, at which time Carlos Mesquita promised all parties that the government would address the problem of goods theft.
