Mozambique: Closure of basic services concerns residents of Quissanga
Residents of a Mozambican village in Mueda district, Cabo Delgado, found the bodies of five people in the woods on Wednesday, all showing signs of having been killed violently.
The bodies were deteriorated and were not identified, a member of the local force said, speculating that they might be “terrorists who were wounded when they invaded Homba village” last week, eventually succumbing.
“It’s obvious that these are new faces,” he added.
The discovery was made during routine activities in the forest.
“We were looking for firewood close to the village, when we noticed a strong smell. It was these corpses, with marks of violence,” said one woman from Homba currently displaced with her family to Mueda.
Another source said that the discovery was made after attacks by unknown people in recent weeks, prompting a number of communities (Nanhala, Homba, Xaxaxa, Mandela, Mapate and Nangumbe) to flee.
“We are leaving. The scenario is one of fear and we are going to the district headquarters of Mueda,” the source added.
The general commander of the Mozambican police, Bernardino Rafael, announced on Wednesday the death of 16 suspected terrorists since the beginning of the week.
“Today, we buried 16 terrorists who died from injuries inflicted by the Defence and Security Forces, in addition to snakes, lions and even crocodiles,” Rafael said.
