Mozambique: 29 confirmed mpox cases, including the first in Maputo province

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation of Bishop Francisco João Silota, M. Afr. from the pastoral government of the Diocese of Chimoio in Mozambique [where Dom Francisco João Silota served since 19 November 1990], and has appointed as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Chimoio Dom João Carlos Hatoa Nunes, who was until now titular Bishop of Amudarsa and Auxiliary of Archdiocese of Maputo in his place.
The new Bishop of Chimoio was born in Beira, Sofala province, Mozambique, on March 8, 1968. He attended the Middle Seminary of Christ the King [Seminário Médio de Cristo-Rei] ,in 1985 and 1986, and the Major Seminary of St. Augustine [Seminário Maior de Santo Agostinho], where he took the Philosophical Course from 1987 to 1989, and the Theological Seminary from 1990 to 1992. He was ordained priest of the clergy of the Archdiocese of Maputo on July 17, 1995.
After ordination, he held various positions in the Archdiocese, including that of Chancellor and the Director of Radio Maria. He also held the position of Pro-Vicar General of the Archdiocese when, on May 25, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo. He received episcopal ordination on July 10, 2011.
The episcopal motto of Bishop Dom João Carlos Nunes is “In the midst of you as one who serves”.
