Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário said on Wednesday that poor work quality was one of the main causes of the amount of public infrastructure destroyed in Inhambane by tropical cyclone Dineo.
“The big problem is the quality of the works. Construction projects in our country have to take into account that there will always be cyclones,” Rosario told reporters after a visit to projects destroyed by the weather last week.
Responsible entities should intensify supervision, he said, to verify that work meets security and maintenance requirements.
“The budget that is planned for construction is not used, because the contractors prefer to keep the money,” Carlos Agostinho do Rosario alleged.
Seven people died and more than 650,000 were affected by tropical cyclone Dineo, which also destroyed more than 100 items of public infrastructures, including government buildings, health units and schools, with losses estimated at EUR12 million.
Mozambique is regularly hit by cyclones and floods, which are responsible for substantial material damage and many deaths.
