A delegation made up of representatives of all three parties with seats in the Assembly of the Republic (AR) on Monday (27-03) began a four-day working visit to the Netherlands, where they will exchange experiences on matters related to peacekeeping, electoral processes, decentralization and democratic governance.
Members of Frelimo, the ruling party, Renamo, the largest opposition party, and the Mozambican Democratic Movement (MDM), the second-largest opposition party, will participate in working sessions in the Dutch parliament, as well as holding meetings with political parties such as the CDA, D66 and GreenLeft.
A press release from the Institute for Multiparty Democracy of Mozambique (IMD) sent to AIM reveals that the Mozambican delegation will also meet representatives of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as exploring topics including funding political parties with specialists and non-governmental organizations.
The Netherlands is a strategic partner of Mozambique in supporting the strengthening of multiparty democracy, through programmes financed by civil society organizations and the Mozambican government.
The IMD communique states that the Netherlands is important in the current Mozambican political context because of its democratic maturity and political and electoral stability, with a consolidated decentralization process.
The exchange of experiences takes place within the scope of the IMD’s Governance, Democracy and Elections (GODEL) project, implemented with funding from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mozambique, through its IGUAL programme.
The delegation is made up of 18 representatives, including senior staff from the three Mozambican political parties, members of the secretariat and AR, and representatives of the IMD.
