José Dziwane, the policeman and Frelimo neighbourhood first secretary, who shot Ali Mamadi of Renamo when he went to the police to complain about Dziwane pulling down Renamo posters, has apparently not been arrested. Frelimo spokesperson Domingos Macajo told O Pais (1 October) that Dziwane shot the unarmed Mamadi in self defence.
Our Tete correspondent was given the runaround by Tete police today. Police spokesperson Deolinda Roberto Matsinhe said the police have taken the gun that Dziwane used and that a case had been opened against Dziwane and passed on to the court. But she refused to say any more and said that only the provincial police command could comment, and no one there has been available to say anything.
Meanwhile Ali Mamadi has been transferred to a private clinic because he felt unsafe in the public hospital.
