The police used coercive methods to prevent a march organised by a civil society group in support of Manuel de Araújo, saying that they were not allowed to march in the city, and that they were interfering with the free flow of traffic.

The group of de Araújo supporters started forming in Qelimane’s ‘Jardim dos Namorados’ at around eight this morning intending to march in objection to suggestions that de Araújo might not take office as Quelimane mayor.
Soon after the march began, police quickly intervened and began to force marchers into a police vehicle, O País reports. Those who resisted were beaten, and a woman was also reportedly assaulted.
It was a typical movie scene, the report says. Traffic on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue at the entrance to the city was momentarily interrupted, and only went back to normal once people dispersed or were arrested by the police.
