The Mozambican police on Sunday shot two thieves caught red-handed as they raided a shop in Chimoio, capital of the central province of Manica.
Both thieves suffered serious gunshot wounds, and one lost his life in the Manica Provincial Hospital in Chimoio. The second is continuing to receive medical care.
The spokesperson for the Manica Provincial Police Command, Elsidia Filipe, told reporters on Monday that the thieves broke into the shop early on Sunday morning. They began helping themselves to goods in the store, including mobile phones. They found where the shop owner kept the day’s takings, but before they could escape with their loot the police arrived.
The thieves were unaware that their break-in set off an alarm at the home of the owner. The noise woke him up, and he immediately contacted the police, who arrived at the shop in time to abort the robbery.
Briefing reporters on events in the province over the past week, Filipe said there had been three serious traffic accidents, in which three people had died and six were injured.
