Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) detained two men, a Mozambican and a Gambian, in Beira last Thursday (27-10) in possession of almost six million meticais in counterfeit banknotes.
Sernic spokeswoman for Sofala province, Lurdes Cuchama, cited by Rãdio Moçambique, said the banknotes had been produced in Tanzania.
Cuchama indicated that the group of counterfeiters had been followed by the police for some time, in an investigative work which had been taking place “since February”.
“It was a very long process. SERNIC followed each gang member’s trajectory until their arrival in the city of Beira, where it was possible to neutralise them at the Maquinino bus stop, where the counterfeit bills were seized. Steps are still underway to locate and neutralise the others involved in this crime,” Cuchama said.
Meanwhile, Miramar reports that the police followed the money since its entry from Tanzania in Cabo Delgado and then to Nampula and Manica provinces before arriving in Beira.
The Gambian national denies having any knowledge of the money and told Miramar the he is just a friend of the other detainee who he met in Chimoio before travelling with him in the same vehicle to Beira. Still according to the Miramar report, the Mozambican detainee claimed that he did carry the money – which he says he knew was fake – all the way from Cabo Delgado, adding that he did it at the request of a Tanzanian individual who intended to buy a vehicle in Beira.
