The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) seized 472 packages of various drugs on Tuesday as they were being loaded into a minibus on Ilha de Moçambique, Nampula province, in the north of the country, the corporation announced yesterday.
The seizure took place following a tip-off, provincial police spokesman Dércio Samuel said, and the substances had been sent to a laboratory for identification and quantification, but the suspicion is that the seizure includes methamphetamine.
Police believe the drugs were transported by boat to a local beach.
“The individuals who were about to transport the drug fled when they saw the police,” the PRM spokesperson said.
The police said that investigations were underway to arrest and bring to account the owners of the drugs and the vehicle found at the scene.
International organizations place Mozambique on several drug trafficking routes, mainly originating in Asia and crossing the Indian Ocean.
