Police seized 13 elephant tusks and arrested two suspected poachers, one Mozambican and one Tanzanian in Quissanga district in Cabo Delgado province last week.
According to police spokesman Marcia Zucula, the accused were also in possession of a firearm believed to have been used to kill the elephants.
The accused have confessed to the crime, claiming everything they did was necessary for their survival.
Police suspect that the 13 tusks come from elephants in the Quirimbas National Park.
