Mozambique Elections: Court freezes Mondlane’s bank accounts - AIM report
Mozambican police in Manica have seized a weapons cache on a former Renamo base in the Mucuti Um, area of Moha, in Sussendenga district. Eleven 82 mm pieces of ammunition for mortars and a Mauser-type firearm with ammunition were secured.
The cache was discovered on Wednesday, August 31, 50 kilometres from the village of Sussendenga, in a former Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) barracks where renewed military movements were recently reported.
“The district police command has carried out work that allowed the identification of the cache. The material was found in an inaccessible mountain location and was not buried,” Manica police spokesperson Elcidia Filipe said.
“We already have some clues regarding the ownership of the weapons, in so far as it was found in what was a Renamo base during the last military conflict, but we can not say categorically that it was they who hid the material,” Filipe explained.
Police said no-one had been arrested in connection with the case but that the investigation was ongoing because the condition of the material made it a “potential risk” for the surrounding communities.
The ordnance, which was temporarily displayed to the press at Sussendenga district headquarters, was collected and deposited in “an appropriate place”, with investigations focusing suspicions on Renamo, involved in clashes with defence and security forces recently.
