The Police General Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) said yesterday in a statement that investigations and interrogations aimed at discovering the reasons behind the attacks in the Mozambican district of Mocímboa da Praia are continuing.
“The National Criminal Investigation Service [SERNIC] and other organs of judicial administration continue with the investigations and interrogations of detainees, in order to uncover the real motivations and the consequent accountability of the accused, preventing future actions,” a Mozambican police note said.
The Police General Command did not hold its usual press conference yesterday, but referred to the attacks on police units in the district of Mocímboa da Praia on October 5 without mentioning further incursions subsequent to that date attributed to a group in the district.
The attacks, with machetes and machine guns, killed at least 28 people (six security force personnel, 19 attackers and a community leader) and left an unknown number wounded since October 5.
The police announced five days after the start of the clashes that they had arrested 52 people, though a police source in the village later told Lusa that several of those people had already been released after inquiries,
