Police in Manica province in the centre of the country have rescued a village leader abducted several day ago by armed Renamo men, a spokesman announced today.
Elcidia Filipe said that the defense and security forces (FDS) searched a Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) position in the village of Macu in Chiquequete (Mossurize) and rescued the man from captivity.
“At 6:00 AM on October 1, defense and security forces clashed with gunmen in Macu, without casualties on either side,” Filipe said during the regular weekly Manica police press conference. “A person was rescued from the hands of armed Renamo men.”
Without specifying the date of the kidnapping or the time spent in captivity, Filipe said that defence and security forces were tipped off by locals and conducted a successful rescue operation, going on to disable the Renamo military unit.
The same briefing included news of a Renamo ambush of an FDS patrol in the village of Tchito in Mavonde district, Manica province, again without casualties.
“An FDS patrol was ambushed at 6:00 PM on September 30 in Tchito zone by four armed Renamo men,” Filipe said. “The clashes did not result in casualties, but a homemade firearm was recovered,” he added.
Central Mozambique has been the scene of clashes between the armed wing of the main opposition party and the FDS, with mutual allegations of abductions and assassinations of political leaders of Renamo and the Frelimo.
