Mozambican police on Thursday rescued a businessman who had been kidnapped on Monday in Beira, Sofala central province, and detained two suspects, the corporation announced.
“Due diligence culminated in the rescue of the victim,” Daniel Macuacua, spokesman for the provincial command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Sofala, told a press conference.
“The two suspects are being held and two more are still on the run,” he added.
Xian Yao, a transport businessman, was kidnapped on his way out of a health clinic, he told reporters, showing several abrasions on his face that he said were caused by the kidnappers.
One of the detainees believed to have orchestrated the crime is also of Chinese nationality, while the other suspect is Mozambican, the police said.
The kidnappers asked for 25 million meticais for ransom – about 338,000 euros.
The man was taken in a car from the Maquinino area and held captive in a rented residence in Bairro da Cerâmica, Beira city.
