Mozambican police rapid intervention units, commonly known as FIR, were mobilised to Morrumbala district, the scene of an invasion by armed Renamo men, according to a Diário da Zambézia report from Monday, August 15 2016.
Ernesto Serrote, police spokesman for Zambezia told Diário da Zambézia that FIR brigades stationed in Sabe and Nicoadala were called to respond a few hours after the episode started.
The Renamo men vandalised the district hospital and looted drugs, created havoc in the local administration headquarters and broke into the police District Command, where they released 23 prisoners.
One can see the size of the problem when 23 offenders are set free. How can one describe the level of safety, a fundamental necessity for people to subsist, in the area?
As we reported after the attack on Mopeia village, one of the motives behind the attack was the release of a Renamo man who was detained at the local police station, so we asked spokesman Serrote what the reason for Morrumbala village headquarters being ambushed might actually have been.
He replied: “You know, Mr Journalist, you journalists are the ones who report the situations that occur in Mozambique, and I believe you are not unaware of what is happening, because all the people follow what occurs through the news media and these media organisations are you journalists. What I say is that any situation that happens in terms of provocation, we give the answer.”
So may the reasons be similar to Mopeia? “One thing has nothing to do with another,” Serrote replied, going on to assure everyone that peace had however been restored and the life of the population continued normally.
