Mozambique police have promised to provide details on the worsening violence in Cabo Delgado in recent days, spokesperson Inácio Dina said at the corporation’s usual weekly press briefing.
“Regarding the current situation in Cabo Delgado, we will have to communicate in a timely manner, and we are now reserving some co-ordinations that are taking place at the moment,” Dina said in response to question about the security situation in the province.
Inácio Dina had no details of the attack on a passenger bus, the first of its kind in the Nangade district, and the death of its seven occupants.
Dina also faced questions from journalists about the circumstances and reason for the arrest of a journalist allegedly in the custody of soldiers at Mueda barracks in Cabo Delgado. News reports indicate that he was detained while covering the plight of the villages affected by attacks by armed men in the northern districts of Cabo Delgado.
“We are coordinating and sharing information. We will share the circumstances of the arrest or detention of your colleague, who is also our colleague,” the police spokesman said.
Still speaking in the usual weekly police press briefing, Dina revealed that in the first week of 2019, 117 crimes were reported – 21 less than in the same period of 2018.
“In general terms, we have about a 15 percent reduction in the crime rate,” Dina said.
Dina revealed that 102 of the crimes – mostly crimes against the property – had already been solved.
