Defence and Security Forces yesterday overran a Renamo barracks in Mocuba, Zambezia, in central Mozambique, storming the headquarters on Tuesday morning. The news was confirmed to the media by the provincial police command spokesman, Jacinto Felix.
“At around 7:00 AM, defense and security forces took the second Renamo base, located in Morotone. This happens after we took a Renamo base in Morrumbala on the 16th (September). We are now chasing up the Renamo gunmen.”
The operation comes the day after Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi condemned the murder of opposition party member and State Councilor Jeremias Pondeca, and demanded that the authorities solve the case as quickly as possible.
The governments of Portugal, France and the USA and the European Union have also condemned the murder, encouraging the government and Renamo to pursue dialogue to end the ongoing political and military crisis.
Mozambique’s main opposition party has said it will not abandon the peace talks in the country despite the murder of a member of its delegation. It has been announced that the dialogue between the parties will restart on 18 October.
