Mozambique: Maputo City Council loses six garbage collection vehicles
A 28-year-old man, whose identity was not immediately clear, was killed by a bullet fired by a policeman in Quelimane, capital of Zambezia province.
The death occurred last Thursday (7 September) with A Verdade learning that “the deceased met this death in the Sangariveira neighbourhood, when he was drinking alcohol in a ‘barraca’ with friends”. Notícias reports today that the the police officer has already been arrested.
The incident, A Verdade points out, is not the first in the city to involve members of an entity whose function is to guarantee public security and order, combat infractions of the law and ensure the protection of people, wherever they are.
According to witnesses, the policeman who took the young man’s life went to the bar to demand that the proprietor close the establishment on account of the lateness of the hour. There was an exchange of words, and the policeman suddenly drew his weapon and fired at the man’s forehead.
Another version of the incident adds that there were other members of the Community and Protection Police in the bar at the time.
Attempted kidnapping
Also in Zambézia, police on the same day thwarted an attempt to kidnap a Bengali citizen in Gurúè district. The intended victim was a merchant in the administrative post of Lioma who had gone to Gurúè to withdraw 500,000 meticais from the bank to pay his workers.
