The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) killed four suspected criminals on Monday evening on one of the main avenues in the city of Maputo, the corporation spokesman said today.
The group “shot down” in the early evening was travelling in a Honda vehicle on Avenue 10 de Novembro, police spokesman Leonel Muchina said. Two pistols and an AK-47 were found in the vehicle.
“We had reliable information that a gang was in the downtown [Baixa] area intention on committing an illegal act,” Muchina said.
Police officers followed the suspects who, when approached on one of the city’s main thoroughfares, “opened fire on the police” he added. “All four were killed in the returning fire.”
A second vehicle – in addition to the vehicle in which the four suspects, all aged between 25 and 35, were killed – managed to get away.
“All four were criminals known to the police. We were already monitoring them, and actions are now underway to locate those who fled,” Muchima said.
The vehicle, which was hit by more than 20 bullets, was travelling down the avenue where both the Ministries of Economy and Finance and Foreign Affairs and Cooperation are located.
