Police intercept ivory gang in Nampula

Three members of a gang involved in the theft and illegal sale of precious stones and ivory tips in Nampula have been arrested, one of whom was shot in the lower limb.
In addition to the tips of ivory, the accused were also found in possession of volumes of paper used for counterfeiting the dollar currency.
The operation was carried out by the Police of the Republic of Mozambique in coordination with the National Criminal Investigation Service.
“In their neutralisation, one of the individuals attempted to escape, which forced the police to shoot the individual who was hit in the leg,” said Zacarias Nacute, adding that the individuals led the police to a residence where seven tips of ivory were found, with four volumes of paper used to counterfeit the dollar.
The police has assured that it will continue to track other members of the gang to take them to account.
