Police yesterday foiled an attempted trafficking of seven youths to South Africa.
The victims agreed to travel after receiving promises of employment in the neighbouring country.
The trip to South Africa was aborted after police received a complaint against a 22-year-old man indicted for attempted trafficking in seven neighbours on the pretext of finding work for them in South Africa.
The victims say they accepted the offer owing to unemployment in Mozambique.
The driver of the truck that was to transport the victims to the Ponta d’Ouro border has denied involvement in the crime, saying he is innocent.
And the accused denied being a trafficker and claimed he has always helped people find jobs in South Africa.
He claims about 30 Mozambicans are working in South Africa all to his help.
But police say this was another criminal action whose purpose was “to traffic this group of young people”.
At criminal case has since been opened against the trafficker.
According to article 198 of the Criminal Code, trafficking in persons is a crime punishable by a prison sentence of between 16 and 20 years.
