Mozambique: Health centre vandalized in Mogovolas

The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) recently dismantled a home-made factory in Matutuíne district, Maputo province, seizing 20 12-bore weapons and instruments used in their manufacture.
Police were tipped off to the gun factory’s location by the local population responding to calls to combating poaching in a district with one of the largest reserves in the country. Popular reports indicate that the weapons were sold to local poachers for about 5000 meticais apiece.
The owner of the workshop, now at large, apparently worked alone, making the weapons from scrap material. Emidio Mabunda, PRM spokesman in Maputo province, says police have information concerning his whereabouts and are on his trail.
The workshop’s situation at a distance from the owner’s residence was the reason for some delay in pinpointing its exact location.
Local authorities are currently trying to persuade communities to hand in illegal or unwanted weapons voluntarily, and police are pointing out that weapons that can kill animals can also kill people.
