About 125 kg of drugs seized by police in Inhambane were burned yesterday.
According to O Pais, the police burned 102 kg of cocaine, 19 kg of ‘soruma’ (cannabis sativa) and 3.5 kg of hashish, ephedrine and heroin seized over the past year in different districts of the province.
“It is not often that such a large quantity of cocaine is seized. A hundred and two kilograms is a lot. The seizure came about due to sources who warned us about the suspect’s movement – that’s how we took it out of circulation,” provincial director of SERNIC in Inhambane Joaquim Manuel Dungane said.
The cocaine was seized on the Save River last May and is estimated to be worth just over 135 million meticais (around US$2.2 million).
Police say they are looking for the owners of the drug in order to be hold them accountable.
“This drug is worthy US$5,000 per kilogram. The drug was moving in the north-south direction, more precisely from the province of Cabo Delgado, bound for Maputo. The owner is part of a large network of drug traffickers and we are after him,” Dungane said, promising that the authorities were capable of putting a stop to the circulation of drugs in the province and discouraging their production, sale or consumption.
