Mozambique: Chapo calls for sustainable development of municipalities

Two members of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) were arrested in Nampula on Tuesday, October 4, for carrying their party’s flag during Peace Day celebrations in the Square of Mozambican Heroes.
Although there is no actual legal instrument prohibiting political party flags on national festival days, Nampula police believe that these dates are national and non-partisan, and the arrest of the two MDM activists was therefore justified.
In addition to carrying their party flag, the pair are also charged with disobeying police orders.
Nampula MDM political delegate Luciano Tarieque however says the arrests are another instance of police harassment and has called for the release of pair and demanded that police stop persecuting the country’s opposition parties.
Police spokesman Zacarias Nacute said that the arrests were not directed against the party, and that the corporation was only concerned with maintaining public order.
