More than 50 people were detained on Monday for blocking the Maputo ring road in the Matlemele area.
The incident started on Sunday when Matlemele residents decided to set up barricades on their section of the Maputo Ring Road, demanding clarification on the resettlement process connected to the future Matlemele landfill.
According to protesters, Matola municipality now says it will not build houses for them as initially agreed, but will only allocate them land.
Three citizens were arrested on Sunday [in connection to the barricade] and, on Monday, fifty people who reportedly went to visit them, described as “their companions”, were incarcerated upon arriving at the police station.
The citizens claim that they were tortured on Monday night, with one of the detainees claiming he had to be taken to a health unit.
Matola city court ruled on the case on Tuesday morning, releasing the protesters but fining them 449 meticais each, a total of about 23,000 meticais.
Police confirm the fact of the detention but say their course of action was exclusively aimed at re-establishing public order and tranquillity, the demonstrators being engaged in criminal activity.
