The Mozambican police on Friday arrested a gang of three members in the northern city of Nampula, who had specialized in robbing houses and terrifying their victims with sharp implements such as machetes.
The three, whose names have not yet been released, are young men who have been hunted by the police for some time. A police patrol finally caught them, and seized their weapons on Friday morning.
When reporters visited the police station where the three are being held, they denied all the charges against them.
The man who is allegedly the ringleader declared “We never committed crimes, We don’t recognise that we used these machetes. Sorry, but I have nothing further to say”.
The spokesperson for the Nampula provincial police command, Zacarias Nacute, said the supposed thieves were arrested thanks to a tip-off.
“The police had been receiving denunciations about this group which the local people call ‘nacatana’ (from the Portuguese word for a machete)”, said Nacute. “We took measures, and we succeeded in arresting this group of people who spent their time robbing homes using the threat of machetes”.
