Mozambican police have arrested four people suspected of cloning ATM cards in Chimoio, in the centre of the country, and seized 29 cards pertaining to several banks, a corporation source has told Lusa.
The suspects copied the cards at automated teller machines while ostensibly helping users unfamiliar with their operation, Manica police spokesman Mateus Mindu said.
The PRM was involved in an exchange of fire with the gang in the course of their neutralisation.
The monetary value of this type of fraud is not yet known, Mindu said, adding that the largest single category of victims were former combatant pensioners.
“The individuals were spotted on Sunday during another of their raids, and were caught with cards from different banks,” Mindu said, noting that “the number of victims could be high”.
Mateus Mindu called for bank card users to seek help from bank employees or ATM security agents if they needed it.
This is the second such group detained in Manica this year, following earlier arrests in Vanduzi district, where the scammers’ main target was teachers.
