Mozambique: Electricity supply down for 501,000 people in three provinces
The Mozambican police on Monday afternoon arrested five suspects for the murder on Sunday of an Indian engineer, Naryanan Sasi, in the central city of Chimoio.
The five arrested, named as Miguel Farias, Hussene Mussa, Martinho Juma, Abacar Issufu and Molte Abacar, are all from the northern province of Nampula. When the police made the arrests, they seized from the suspects 4,330 rupees. The Indian currency had been stolen during the burglary of the house where the 63 year old Sasi had been living with four other Indians.
The spokesperson for the Manica Provincial Police Command, Elsidia Filipe, said the arrests were the result of police investigations launched immediately after the Chimoio police became aware of the murder.
“Through the collaboration of the community, it was possible to gather evidence leading us to conclude that these are the individuals who committed the crime”, said Filipe. “They were in possession of foreign currency stolen during the robbery”. Investigations were continuing to determine the degree of responsibility of each of the five in the murder.
Sasi was tied up, and apparently choked to death when the bandits tried to silence him by stuffing rags in his mouth and over his nose. In addition to money, the assailants also stole three computers and six mobile phones from the house.
Sasi, an engineer from the southern Indian state of Kerala, had been living in Chimoio for the past three years. He was managing irrigation projects in Manica and the neighbouring province of Sofala.
