Mozambique: Mondlane complains of "blockages" in legalizing his party - Watch
The General Police Command yesterday assured the public that no members of the Defence and Security Forces were involved in the execution of six people in Sofala last Friday.
The two survivors of the massacre accused the police and military of having carried out the killings, leading police spokesperson Inacio Dina to urge the populations to become more vigilant so that they are not deceived by armed Renamo men passing themselves off as defence and security forces in order to perpetrate attacks.
“It is a fact that is Renamo that is committing these atrocities. We deeply regret that they seek to confuse the public by pretending to be security forces,” Dina said.
“This is not an attribution – it is an observation. The group dispatched to the site after the incident gleaned clear information that it was [carried out by] armed Renamo men,” he said.
According to Dina, the attacks on and looting of four cars in the same part country, which also culminated in the beating of defenceless citizens, proves these conclusions are correct.
Police calls on the population to remain vigilant, in view of it being probable that Renamo would use the same trick in future.
In the regular weekly police press briefing, Dina also revealed that there is an ongoing investigation into the causes of a Mercedes Benz catching fire in the early hours of Saturday after crashing on the Maputo ring road in an accident that killed the couple travelling in the vehicle.
However, Dina characterised the overall operational situation last week as reasonable, thanks to the clarification of 105 of the 127 criminal cases registered.
Of these crimes, 73 were against property. In the same period of 2015, 96 cases were registered. There was also a reduction in crimes against the person from 49 to 41.
