Mozambican police yesterday accused Renamo of attacking another mining company train in Sofala province in central Mozambique, the second attack this week. According to Rádio Moçambique, the driver was injured in Wednesday’s attack.
Sofala police spokesman Daniel Macuácua said the attack occurred at around 8:00 p.m., when suspected Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) gunmen fired on a Vale train heading towards Beira from Moatize in Tete province.
“Defence and security forces are on the ground and searching for the Renamo men,” Macuacua said.
The train driver was injured due by flying glass from a shattered windscreen during the incident but drove on to the next stop, where he received medical treatment.
This is the second attack on a Vale train in less than three days. An attack on Tuesday on a Vale train on the Sena line in Sofala, also attributed to Renamo by the police, injured the train’s engineer.
Renamo spokesman Antonio Muchanga denied his party’s involvement and pointed out that the trains had been attacked near Defence and Security Forces positions.
“This is an issue that the Defence and Security Forces have to answer. Why are the trains being attacked in places near Defence and Security Forces positions?” Muchanga asked.
