Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario on Friday called for strengthening the fight against corruption in the Mozambique Tax Authority (AT).
Speaking at a national AT parade, in the southern district of Moamba, Rosario stressed that the AT should set an example in preventing and fighting against corruption.
Cited by the independent daily “O Pais”, he praised the AT’s compliance with its tax collection targets, but added
“You must continue committed to do all in your power to ensure that the targets are met, not only for this year, but also for next year”.
Rosario added that the introduction of fiscal machines will allow adequate registration of sales in markets and other commercial establishments. He thought it necessary to speed up the introduction of the machines in order to broaden the tax base.
He insisted on the importance of bringing businesses from the informal sector into the formal sector, “not only to ensure increased revenue for the state, but also to guarantee that the goods and services bought and sold in these markets are safe and pose no risk to public health”.
Rosario also urged the AT to continue the reforms under way in the institution, seeking to facilitate imports and exports through simplifying customs procedures.
AT chairperson Amelia Nakhare told the ceremony that the level of tax collection from 1 January to 3 December was 195.3 billion meticais (about 3.15 billion US dollars). That is 87.6 per cent of the target for 2018 of 222.8 billion meticais. To reach the target, the AT must collect a further 27.5 billion meticais before the end of the year.
