Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho Rosario, in his capacity as a member of the Political Committee of the ruling Frelimo Party, on Thursday led a Frelimo election brigade to canvass for votes in the Chiaula market, in the northern city of Lichinga.
Rosario urged the market vendors to ensure that the Frelimo mayoral candidate, Luis Jumo, will be in charge of the Lichinga municipality for the next five years. By voting for Frelimo in the municipal elections of 10 October, he said, they would be ensuring improved facilities for the market, and continued development of the city.
Frelimo, he continued, is a mature party in governance, and is well aware of the essential concerns of citizens, and so “it will be easy to solve the problems”.
He asked the sellers if they preferred their maize porridge already cooked, or would take their chances with an unknown cook. Naturally, they all preferred the ready cooked meal.
But this market has a reputation as a stronghold for the main opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo. Young people in Rosario’s audience were sceptical about his message, and some told him “we’re tired”.
Several displayed Renamo leaflets. When AIM contacted them, they said they were indeed Renamo members – but they would not be voting in the election, because they had not registered as voters, and so are not eligible to vote.
