Street vendors trading on the sidewalks and elsewhere in downtown Maputo [Baixa] clashed with police this morning, O País reports, when authorities called on them to enforce the edict obliging them to relocate, with immediate effect, to stalls and kiosks in municipal markets.
In addition to placing obstacles in the road and preventing the free movement of public transport and private vehicles, the protesters have been throwing objects at vehicles and police officers.
This Thursday was the final deadline for the relocation of street vendors decreed by the Maputo City Council, a strategy deigned to recapture the sidewalks occupied by informal traders for years, obstructing the circulation of people and vehicles and violating council policy.
The removal of street vendors initially prioritises Avenues Zedequias Manganhela, Filipe Samuel Magaia, Samora Machel, 25 de Setembro and Karl Marx.
In the days running up to the deadline, the Municipality has been running a campaign to raise awareness and encourage voluntary relocation to municipal markets.
