The transport of passengers and goods by boat, along the shore of Lake Niassa, in the far north of Mozambique, will resume this month, pledged Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, at an election rally in the municipality of Metangula on Sunday.
Two routes will be reopened – one from Metangula to a second lakeside town, Cobue, and the other to Mikoma, a small Malawian island in the lake.
The ferry service was guaranteed by a boat known locally as “Chambu”, but it broke down in late 2017, and was taken to a port on the Malawian side of the lake for repairs, causing serious problems for Mozambicans who had depended on the ferry.
Speaking as head of the central Frelimo brigade sent to assist the Frelimo election candidates in the Niassa municipalities, Rosario told the rally that, in voting for Frelimo in the 10 October municipal elections, they will be guaranteeing the resumption of the “Chambu” ferry service.
“We shall resume the transport in October, here in Metangula”, he pledged.
Rosario also promised rehabilitation of the road linking Metangula to the Niassa provincial capital, Lichinga, and the construction of an operating theatre, essentially for pregnant women, in the Metangula health centre. He added that in November a new water supply system for the town should begin to operate.
He urged his audience to pay no attention to the propaganda of the opposition political party. “If they come and ask you to vote for them, tell them they’re late”, Rosario declared.
