The Mozambican prosecutor’s office is investigating a complaint about the disappearance of 20 cheques from the municipality of Quelimane, central Mozambique, the entity’s spokesperson in Zambezia province has announced.
Domingos Julai said that three of the 20 cheques had already been cashed, signalling the embezzlement of more than 837,000 meticais (US$13,796 at current exchange rates) from the municipality’s coffers.
The complaint was filed by the office of the mayor of Quelimane on 28 August this year, Julai said.
Until last month, the municipality of Quelimane was formally directed by Manuel de Araújo, who was removed from office by the Council of Ministers for violating municipal legislation.
Although dismissed, Manuel Araújo refuses to leave the post on the grounds that he was not heard by the Council of Ministers in the process that culminated in his expulsion and that the decision has no effect until the 20-day deadline for the submission of an appeal to the Administrative Court has expired.
The Mozambican government considers that Manuel de Araújo violated the law by joining the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, while still in the office to which he was elected by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique, the country’s third-largest political party.
Manuel de Araújo was presented as the head of Renamo’s list for the October 10 municipal elections.
