The Mozambican Attorney General’s Office has ordered the closure of the prison cells in the Maputo Police Command within two weeks, on the grounds that they are inappropriate and have been used for the preparation of criminal acts.
A PGR source, quoted by Noticias, Mozambique’s main daily newspaper, reports that the inmates detained in the police station of Maputo police will be transferred to the maximum security jail of Machava, commonly known as “BO”, on the outskirsts of the capital.
The PGR believes that the police command prison cells neither provide the conditions for the rehabilitation of prisoners nor are fit for serving prison sentences and have furthermore been used for the preparation of crimes, including abductions and homicides.
Although imprisonment in the Maputo city police command cells was considered illegal by judicial authorities, it was tolerated because it apparently offered greater security in view of the risk of escape of detainees convicted of serious crimes.
