Petitions for the non-payment of Mozambique’s ‘hidden debts’ have been sent to the United States and England, a coalition of civil society organisations revealed in Maputo on Tuesday.
Led by the Budget Monitoring Forum, the Mozambican civil society grouping on Tuesday submitted its second petition to the Constitutional Council, requesting that the debts of MAM and ProIndicus be declared unconstitutional and annulled.
Unlike the first petition – which the promoters said was submitted 581 days before the press conference last Tuesday and still has not received a response from the Constitutional Council – the second will involve international organisations based in the United States and England.
The initiative also demands that the Mozambican government cancel its ongoing restructuring negotiations with creditors.
The second petition already has more than 2,000 signatures, with a campaign to secure more due to be launched in the UK later this week.
