Prime Minister Agostinho do Rosário reiterated yesterday in Lichinga, Niassa, that the Mozambican economy was recovering, a fact reflected in the stability of macroeconomic indicators, and annual inflation falling to around 12.1 percent, a nine percentage points decrease compared to the same period last year.
“Given the current trend, we believe that by the end of this year inflation may be in single figures,” the prime minister told the Niassa Investors’ Conference, adding that the government was committed to promoting the improvement of transport logistics in order to reduce transaction costs and make Niassa more attractive and competitive.
He highlighted the inauguration of the railway line re-establishing the Lichinga-Cuamba-Entre-Lagos connection and between Moatize and Nacala Port in the provinces of Niassa, Tete and Nampula, respectively.
The ongoing construction of the Lichinga-Cuamba road and the Lichinga-Litunde section, which will complete the connection to the Marrupa district, will accomplish the government’s challenge to link Niassa to the sea, a precondition for the outflow of goods from the ports of Nacala and Pemba, which will be served by maritime cabotage from the second half of this year.
The prime minister encouraged the business sector to increase production and productivity in order to take advantage of the freight transport logistics platforms, thereby reducing costs per unit of freight transported.
The Niassa Investors’ Conference is attended by 364 representatives from private sector institutions, embassies, higher education establishments, the government and political parties. The event aims to improve the province’s potential to attract investment.
In partnership with local civil society, the Niassa provincial government has developed, a 12-year strategic development plan listing agriculture, tourism and conservation and mineral resources are areas most likely to promote development.
To ensure the effective exploitation of resources, the province needs to develop roads, logistics, potable water supply, electricity and human capital, among others, which is why it was promoting the investment event, Niassa’s Governor Arlindo Chilundo said.
